Psalm 23:1

Psalm 23:1

Psalm 23:1 ‘The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.’

Jesus wants to be your shepherd. We can only say that the Lord is our shepherd when we are submitted to his leadership and guidance.

A shepherd leads, guide, etc

How does the Lord lead us? Let’s look at one of the ways.

Through his word- Every guidance we need is in the word and the Lord Jesus is the word of God . John 1:1 says ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God’.

If you want to be close to the Lord, then let the word be your home. ‘Lord you are my shepherd, I shall not want.’ This is the saying of someone who is submitted to the word of God. A sheep will not want provision, healing, deliverance, favour etc because he has a shepherd. The Lord will not allow the enemy to destroy his sheep. He will warn the sheep about the devices of the enemy and he will protect and deliver from the wicked one. John 10:11-12 says ‘I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.’

Through his word, we avoid certain mistakes, know what to do and what not to do. Psalm 119:105 says ‘Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.’

How does the Lord become my shepherd? Begin to obey his leadings and guidance through his word and through that you will know and hear his voice. He says in John 10:2-5 ‘But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.’

A daily quiet time of prayer and reading the word of God is a good place to start.

‘ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.’
