“There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it – and I won’t take it away from her”. Luke 10:42 TLB
This incident took place when Jesus and his disciples were on their way to Jerusalem and came to a village where Mary and Martha were living.
Anytime a great man of God visits a house what do we expect? The best of all things. We will usually be busy, moving mountains, clearing everything that is an obstacle to give the man of God a very good reception.
What about those who do not take an active part in preparations for the man of God? We tend to be angry with them, cast insinuations, and probably even approach the man of God to admonish them to get busy and to help prepare the meal.
That is what happened in this verse.
What at all was wrong with Mary? Knowing that there was a great guest in their house, why would she JUST SIT down to hear what Jesus was saying? At least, she should have left that for the men, while she went to the kitchen to help prepare food for Jesus. Preparing food could also be tagged as “working for the Lord”.
Jesus however does not see as men do.
Martha angrily came to ask her sister to stop listening to Jesus and to come and help her “work for him”. In other words, leave the word and come and help me to work for the Lord.
Jesus however explained to Martha that there is only one thing worth being concerned about; and Mary had discovered it and He will not take it away from her.
What is the Lord saying? Busyness and working for him is not the same as listening to His word. Listening to His word is far greater and unfortunately is not something that people easily discover. It easier to work for Him than to sit down at His feet to hear Him speak. Mary discovered it and the Lord said He will not take it away from her.
Have you discovered it also?
Do we spend more time learning and listening to His word or are we always doing activities for Him?
“one thing is worth being concerned about“.
Let’s pray 🙏
Father thank you for your mercies and your grace towards us. You always through your word point us to the path of life. Please help us to spend time with You through your word in Jesus’s name.
Amen 🙏
